Welec: ‘Ready for the future with SafanDarley’

After working for an international installation company for 20 years, Willy Eyckmans felt the time was right to set up on his own. Working out of a back room and garden in Voortkapel, Belgium, he started out as Welec Electro Techniek on 1 April 1991. Today, his business in Westerlo has a workforce of around 180, providing high-quality total solutions for electrical applications in industry. “Expertise and quality are important values for us, that’s why we’ve gone for SafanDarley,” says Eyckmans.

“Welec stands for Willy Eyckmans electricity works,” Eyckmans tells me in the attractive company building in Westerlo, some 60 kilometres south of the Breda-Tilburg line. “Welec has always stressed the importance of drawing up proper agreements and having a good service policy: 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
The company has enjoyed constant growth, and annual turnover is now 20 million euros. “We specialised in electrical installations, initially for local companies in particular. But as these companies began to grow and needed more complex installations, Welec grew with them.”

Investment
As a result of this constant growth and of wanting to optimise sheet metalworking for the Panel Building section, Eyckmans searched the market for the right investment for his business. “Having attended a number of trade fairs at home and abroad, we came into contact with SafanDarley. We paid them a visit at their invitation and they convinced us of the fantastic quality of their machines,” the entrepreneur explains. Eyckmans did not rush. “SafanDarley is not the cheapest on the market, but we’ve gone for integrated safety, energy conservation and shorter cycle times. With SafanDarley, we now have machines that offer good quality every time. The package included staff training, so our designer draughtsmen and even the head operator have undergone training.”

Options
With this investment, Welec’s machinery is now entirely CNC controlled. “All our sheet handling—aluminium, copper, stainless steel, steel, and in particular plastic sheets—can now be handled quickly and correctly. We can control the CNC machines from our EPLAN or AutoCAD drawings and the system manages a material list and a stock list. Now, with SafanDarley, we really are ready for the future.”
